Small Japanese Satsuma Vase Circa 1907
Satsuma Pottery, from the Satsuma Province in Japan, in a traditional style. Initially, Satsuma's finely crackled glaze was the invention of Korean potters living in Satsuma Province. The glaze, although smooth and a creamy white color, was filled with tiny cracks, that reflected light. The crackling was thought to make the piece glow when light was shown upon it. This small vase has traditional colorful geometric diapers over the neck and down the sides, while the main painting illustrates a scholar reading a scroll, against a diapered ground. It is 2 1/2 inches in diameter, and approximately 3 3/4 inches high.
