Chalcedony Carved Bird On Bear

This is a rare and impressive Chalcedony carving of a hawk on the back of a bear, which forms a rebus: "You will be raised to the rank of Marquis". It is early 19th century, and has a carved, fitted rosewood stand. The carving is 6 1/4 inches high when placed on the stand, with the stand measuring approximately 1 inch high. It is 4 1/4 inches at its widest point, and approximately 1 3/4 inches deep.

The chalcedony is beautifully translucent, with shades that range from pale beige to pale blue, and there is a red brown streak on the shoulder of the bear. The bear has his ears laid back against his head.
