20th Century Satsuma Vase

It is covered with finely painted with chrysanthemums, peonies, and two peacocks. All Satsuma style wares, even those from Kyoto or Tokyo rather than Satsuma province are made from earthenware, which is heavier in body than porcelain and lends itself to this crackled glaze. The finest glazed pieces historically were given the least decoration, as to cover the surface would obscure the light reflecting qualities. The rear of the vase has cloudlike colors wrapped around it, difficult to see in the photo. It is circa 1920. The vase measures 10 3/4 inches high. There are no chips or cracks or other damages.
