Shou Lau Carving circa 1860

Shou Lao is more commonly known as Shou Shen, the Taoist Chinese God of Longevity and one of the three Fu Lu Shou or San Xing. Throughout the centuries he has been known under many different names.  He was a part of the important heirarchy of the Daoist religion, which based its view of heavens upon the politics of the earth.

The detail and polishing are excellent on this19th century carving, front and rear with deep relief carving.  The jade is pale green and speckled brown.  Shou Lao holds prayer beads in one hand.  The carving measures approximately 2 inches high, 1.5 inches wide, and is .75 inches deep.
